Story in nutshell – in 1970s China was kind of falling apart, there was famine & people were starving and dying. Given govt controlled all production; they were unable to feed population. Then govt stepped on reform (late 1978-80) opened by farming for public. As population was still below poverty, big corporation managed to corner production (of agriculture, chicken, fish, beef, etc) and as they say necessity is mother of innovation, small individual focused on wild animals to sustain themselves. Given it was helping people earn income and pull themselves from poverty govt supported it. In 1988 govt came up with law that legalized wild animal farming by corporation and boom you had industrialization of wild animal farming. That’s when things got out of hand – more number of animals and different animals all under one rough, which inevitable lead to outbreak of SARS (2002) and now Corona Virus / Covid-19.
The Long Shot – Currently all countries are busy in protecting their citizen, however once it’s taken care of, I wonder if countries pressure China to change its behavior or habits. Key consumption of these wild animal products are twofold, 1) as tonic product (body building, sexual power enhancer, disease fighting etc, which scientifically can be proved not to be working) and 2) Food. This would mean changing medicine and eating habits of millions of Chinese population. Shifting minority of population from animal medicine to allopathic/modern medicine and huge population to other meat & edible food. I wonder if this can lead new opportunity for pharmaceutical industry and Indian pharma company benefiting of same. At the same time we have to remember, China is economic power house and global manufacturing hub.
